What is RS232?

RS232 is a standard protocol used for serial data communication, commonly used for connecting computers to external devices such as modems, printers, and industrial equipment. It defines electrical characteristics, signal functions, and connector pin configurations. It typically uses a DB9 (9-pin) or DB25 (25-pin) connector for communication with DB9 being more common. Here is the function of each pin in a DB9 connector:

Pin 1 DCD (Data Carrier Detect)
Pin 2 RXD (Receive Data)
Pin 3 TXD (Transmit Data)
Pin 4 DTR (Data Terminal Ready)
Pin 5 GND (Ground)
Pin 6 DSR (Data Set Ready)
Pin 7 RTS (Request to Send)
Pin 8 CTS (Clear to Send)
Pin 9 RI (Ring Indicator)

  1. Communication Distance: RS232 typically supports a communication distance of up to 15 meters (about 50 feet), depending on the baud rate and cable quality.
  2. Voltage Levels: RS232 uses negative voltage to represent logic "1" (typically -3V to -15V) and positive voltage to represent logic "0" (typically +3V to +15V).
  3. Point-to-Point Communication: It does not support multi-point communication and only supports point-to-point communication between two devices.
  4. Wiring Method: RS-232 uses single-ended signal transmission. In some simple applications, RS-232 connector can use only three pins, Pin 2, Pin 3, and Pin 5, achieving basic data transmission. However, for more advanced communication requirements, additional pins of the RS-232 connector may be necessary to support extra functionalities, such as flow control or data-ready status.
