What is RS232?

RS232, also called Recommended Standard 232, is a standard serial communication protocol that allows data exchange between devices such as computers, modems, and various industrial equipment. RS232 defines the electrical characteristics and signaling for communication, using voltage levels to transmit data.

Main characteristics of RS232 include:

  1. Point-to-Point Communication: Used for direct communication between two legacy RS232 serial devices, such as a computer and a modem.
  2. Voltage Levels: RS232 uses voltage levels to represent binary data, with a range of -15V to +15V, where a voltage between -3V and -15V represents a binary 1 (low level), and +3V to +15V represents a binary 0 (high level).
  3. Low Data Rate: RS232 supports data transmission speeds commonly between 110 bps and 115,200 bps.
  4. Simple Wiring: RS232 only requires three wires for basic communication: Transmit Data (TXD), Receive Data (RXD), and Ground (GND).
  5. Short Distance Communication: Support communication over short distances, up to 50 feet (15 meters).
